Thank you to the many Rangers players and family members who took their time to share their thoughts with us about how Rangers contributes to the growth of male participation in netball.

Earlier this year, we asked you about your ideas and thoughts regarding how Rangers participates in this growing area of development for our sport at the national and state levels and at our own association, WDNA.As a club, Rangers is eager to actively contribute to the development of our game and ensure the future relevance and competitiveness of Rangers Netball Club as the game of netball continues to evolve.

We are proud to have sought our members views and are committed to keeping you informed as our club navigates this development phase for our sport.

Through the survey responses we received, we heard:

  • Support for male participation in netball, in mixed or male-only competitions in the teenage years and older.
  • A strong desire for Rangers to continue to focus on keeping girls in competitive and social sport.
  • For Rangers as a club to consider specific coaching and umpiring considerations for the integration of male participants for fairness in the application of rules and in play.
  • The rules around male participation, particularly in the playing groups up to and including 12-year-olds, where WDNA rules are in line with Netball Australia rules, are not widely known.

We are pleased to share the recent decision by WDNA to create a mixed division for players 16 years and older in 2026.

Male participation across other age groups will continue in line with the existing WDNA rules.

The rules passed at the WDNA AGM and subsequent General Meeting on Wednesday 26th November, 2025 are as follows:

  • Any number of male players may be on court, in any position, for Playing Groups up to and including 12 Years (existing rule)
  • A maximum of three male players, one in each third, may be on court at any one time, for the 13 Years Playing Group (existing rule)
  • A maximum of one male player may be on court at any one time for 14/15 Years Playing Groups (existing rule)
  • Males 16 years and above must participate in the mixed division.  Standard mixed rules apply.
  • Females 16 years and above may be registered into a mixed team and/or a female team for the same WDNA & NQ fee

This means that female players who are 16 years and older will be able to play in both the female and mixed competitions as part of one registration (i.e. at no extra cost).

This is a great way to build male participation in netball and continue to support female participation in competitive and social sport, and to provide these players with a choice in whether they participate in a mixed competition

What next?

The rules governing male participation at WDNA aredetermined by the WDNA Boardand delegates from all clubs across the association. As a club, we will continueto engage in these developments, consistent with our values while also being mindful of what we have heard from our members.

Rangers will be seeking to register teams in the 16 years+ mixed competition in 2026 and encourage our female players to consider playing in eitherthe female and/or mixed competitions and to help spread the word about the upcoming mixed competition amongst their peers.
